Will President Obama appoint a new 9/11 commission ?
(June 30, 2009)
Many people all over the world are seriously doubting the 9/11 commission report,
they argue that many questions regarding 9/11 are not answered to satisfaction.
Why are so many not comfortable with the work of the old commission ?
What was wrong with it ? Well, in fact many things were wrong.
- Tho old commission was not Bush-independent. Its chairman Philip D. Zelikov was close to the Bush administration,
making the commission disqualified to investigate accusations of crimes suspected done by the same administration.
- Witnesses were not supeened to testify, they were not brought in by by force, thus many important
statements were not heard
- Witnesses were not released from their professional obligation to maintain secrecy
- It was not an obligation to testify under oath
- Lie detector was not used to verify the testimonies
- Witnesses were not promised exemption from sentence from minor crimes
if they could bring the men responsible on top to justice
If, God forbid, the work of the 9/11 commission was to cover up unpleasant facts from 9/11,
this would certainly be the way to do it.
So how could a new commission carry out its mission in a way to clarify the open questions
for all times to come? In fact, it is not so difficult, here is how to do it:
- Make the new commission independent from any party or administration
- Make it trustworthy by including known sceptical scholars to join the commission
- Authorize it by the court system to take evidence, organize it as part of the juridical system
- Give the commission autorization to supeene witnesses to testify, bringing them in by force if necessary
- Release witnesses from their professional obligation to maintain secrecy where this might be an issue, done by a public statement
- Demand that all witnesses have to testify under oath
- Use lie detectors to verify the testimonies
- Promise exemption from sentence for minor crimes if they can give testimony against the men on top
- Make sure that all disputable issues are seriously dealt with, leaving no open questions
- Give witnesses whistler protection to make sure no one are harrassed or loose their jobs by witnessing
- Establish channels for information, and follow up important anonymous tips
- Give the new commission enough rescourses to carry out all the work
Barack Obama may have no reason to doubt the old 9/11 commission report.
Still he might find it very untolerable that so many people all over the world are doubting
the execution of justice in the USA, and that many seriously are calling for a "second opinion".
There is only one thing to do. That is to make sure that anything possible is done to find the guilty
and to make justice happen in a way all people can acknowledge.
USA cannot live with doubt and unanswered questions in this matter.
As a lawyer, President Barack Obama knows what to do and how to do it.
The big question is if he dares. The truth just might be more painful than anybody would like to hear.
